Tech-Neck in Seattle

In a tech-centric city like Seattle, many people spend long hours sitting at desks, hunched over laptops, or looking down at their phones. Over time, these habits can lead to poor posture, chronic neck pain (a.k.a. “tech neck”), headaches, and upper back discomfort. The good news is you don’t have to buy some uncomfortable posture corrector that you’ll throw in the back of a closet, or try to squeeze in a pilates class to your already busy schedule; there are several natural and simple ways to improve posture and support overall spinal health.

How To Improve Your Posture

One of the most effective ways to improve posture is simply increasing awareness. Many people develop what’s called “forward head posture,” which is when the head drifts forward in front of the shoulders. Because the average human head weighs around 10–12 pounds, even a small forward shift can place significant stress on the neck and upper back muscles, especially for prolonged amounts of time. By simply becoming aware of how you sit, and regularly checking your posture throughout the day, you can make a big difference.

Another simple fix is adjusting the tech/workstation to fit you instead of you adjusting to the station. Ideally, your computer screen should be at eye level so you’re not constantly looking down. You should also make sure to relax those shoulders, keep feet flat on the floor, and your back supported by a good, ergonomic chair. Small adjustments like raising your monitor, using a laptop stand, or adding a small, lumbar supportive cushion can help encourage better alignment.

Movement is also key- not just to good posture, but better overall health. The body is not designed to remain in one position for hours at a time! Stand up, stretch, or walk around the room for a few minutes every 30–60 minutes to help reset your posture and reduce muscle tension. Gentle exercises that strengthen the upper back and core muscles can also support better posture over time.

One often overlooked factor in posture is the alignment of the upper neck. The top bone of the spine, called the atlas, plays an important role in supporting the head and maintaining balance in the body. When the upper neck becomes misaligned—often due to injuries, poor posture habits, or repetitive stress—it can contribute to muscle imbalance and postural changes that have long term effects.

The NUCCA Difference

Care using the NUCCA approach focuses on gently restoring proper alignment to the upper cervical spine. By helping to center the head over the neck and body, this type of care may reduce strain on muscles and allow the body to maintain a more natural posture.

At Discover Health Chiropractic, Dr. Reanna Plancich works with patients to support better spinal alignment and nervous system balance through precise upper cervical care. When Seattlites combine NUCCA with good ergonomic habits, regular movement, and postural awareness, it can help reduce tension and support healthier posture in today’s technology bound world.

Improving posture doesn’t require complicated routines. Small daily habits, along with proper spinal alignment, can have a major impact on how your body feels and functions.
